Who are we and what do we do?

The Centre is an independent educational charity with a national and international reputation as a Centre of Excellence. It serves the needs of secondary and FE teachers and students of English and Media Studies in the UK through:

All advisory staff working at the Centre are former teachers.

Where are we?

The Centre is based in a 4 storey Georgian house two-minutes walk from Highbury and Islington Station (Victoria Line underground, and North London Line overground). Buses 4,19 30 and 43 stop outside the Centre.

Visiting the Centre

The Centre is open school terms, Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm and on the first Monday of the Autumn and Spring half-term holidays. You are very welcome to visit us to browse and purchase publications but please ring first.

Lettings

Our Coffee and Seminar rooms are available for hiring on a daily basis. Facilities include: TV, VCR, DVD, OHP, Data projector and interactive whiteboard.

Costs:

  • Seminar room: £160 per full day / £130 per half day
  • Coffee room£120 per full day, when hired as an additional room.
  • Tea/coffee and biscuits: £3 per person
  • Lunch: £6 per person, by arrangement

Consultancy and Advisory Work

In addition to the one and two day professional development courses run at the Centre, we work with departments, schools and LEAs on longer term projects. Recent off-site projects have included: cross-curricular literacy, creativity, improving writing, media. Contact Kate to discuss the ways in which we might work with your department, school or LEA.

Recent NGO, Local National and International Projects

Media Matters-´Review of the Teaching of Media Studies in England´
In 2004 the Centre was commissioned by QCA to review the state of media education in the secondary curriculum, researching and writing Media Matters. Download a pdf version

Teaching Media at KS3

The Centre was commissioned by the DfES to produce a consultant´s training pack and video on media education in the Framework for Teaching English and to run the national training programme which accompanied the publication of this support material.

Media Relate

This book and DVD on Representations of Relationships in the Media was produced by the Centre as part of a joint EU funded project with The Institute of Education and partners in Spain and the Netherlands.

Consultancy and Advice

Working with government and other agencies English and Media Centre are regular contributors to QCA working parties and discussion, most recently on the proposed changes to the 14-19 curriculum and English 21.
The Centre has recently been working on Literacy Projects with the London Boroughs of Wandsworth, Westminster and Croydon.
