EMC CPD Online: Designing an Adaptive KS3 English Curriculum Part 3 – the Novel

The adaptive KS3 English Curriculum series has drawn attention back to the practice of English, and ways of doing English in the classroom that allow all students to have something to say. This short course builds on that foundation, presenting an adaptive model of teaching the KS3 novel which focuses on building students’ practice in what they need to know to access any novel. It draws on a successful project run by EMC with a Year 9 class, focusing on getting the best out of students’ talk and writing when studying a novel. We will focus on:

Why are we studying a novel at KS3?

  • How to set the tone for study
  • Moving students through the novel
  • Student writing – advice and examples
  • An opportunity to ask questions and receive feedback.
