EMC CPD Online: Teaching Writing for KS3 – Inspiring Strategies (3-linked twilights online 18.5, 19.5, 24.5)

Course content

English teachers are increasingly looking to broaden their Key Stage 3 curriculum, and part of this broadening is linked to the kind of written work students are producing between ages 11 and 14. The equivalent of a full day course will be run in three linked twilight sessions, offering you a range of ideas to engage and challenge your students and help them to become confident and independent writers both analytically and creatively, rigorously preparing them for the next stage of their English education. The course will include plenty of resources and classroom ideas, and there will be an opportunity for discussion with colleagues to explore how some of the activities would work with students. This course will run with limited numbers to allow for a more interactive and personalised experience and a chance to have your teaching questions answered.

  • Session 1: Improving Creative Writing (Wednesday 18th May)
  • Session 2: Improving Critical Writing (Thursday 19th May)
  • Session 3: Improving Non-fiction Writing (Tuesday 24th May)

N.B. This is a repeat course.

  • As participants may be audible and visible, this course will not be recorded.

Course tutors: Lucy Hinchliffe and Kate Oliver

Lucy Hinchliffe is EMC’s Research & Projects Lead consultant. Her work is focused on exploring how English is taught in schools and how EMC can best support this through publications and CPD. She also specialises in KS3 and KS4 courses at the Centre, and has contributed to several publications, including the EMC Teaching novels pack for The Bone Sparrow, and EMC Poetry Plus. Lucy was an English teacher, KS3 Coordinator and whole school CPD leader in an outer London school prior to joining EMC full time.

Kate Oliver taught for 14 years in Inner London in various roles. She now works as an education consultant for The English and Media Centre, specialising in KS3 and KS4. Her favourite aspects of English teaching are creative writing and poetry. She also has a particular interest in the wider implications of the subject such as getting students reading for pleasure and engaging teachers of other subjects with language across the curriculum. She is taking the lead on EMC’s involvement with Cheltenham Literature Festival’s ‘Reading Teachers=Reading Pupils’ programme. Her most recent publications for EMC are KS3 Poetry Plus, Just Write and Animal Farm: An EMC Full Text Study Edition.

Testimonials

The course really inspired me. The interactive element was so useful because doing the tasks we would ask the students to do was so much better than just hearing about them – the experience of redrafting, breaking processes down etc helped me imagine the way my students would respond and how they might develop as writers through these ideas.

The activities were creative and highly effective. I can see myself using these approaches in my own lessons.
