Lively approaches for reading this popular novel, in both print and screen-friendly formats.

This publication provides a pick and mix selection of activities for studying the novel with KS3 students. These include:

  • activities to develop reading skills and encourage independence in reading and writing
  • pre-reading activities to whet the appetite and prime pupils for studying the novel
  • activities on key parts of the novel, for example role-play, continuum lines, creative writing, close language work, and reflecting on writers' choices
  • post-reading activities, including hotseating Neil Gaiman, story boxes and mood boards
  • additional resources: a summary of the novel and suggestions for wider reading.

Teachers' notes offer further suggestions, including managing the reading and using the film adaptation.

This resource is based on Kathryn Schofield's winning entry in EMC's resource writing competition for teachers (2011) and has been written by Kathryn, with Kate Oliver from the English and Media Centre.
