According to the British Dyslexia Association, around 10-15% of the UK is dyslexic, so it’s likely that there will be more than one dyslexic student in every class. English will be a significant challenge for these students, who struggle with core aspects of the subject such as: reading speed, fluency and comprehension; organising writing; SPaG.
What do English teachers need to know about dyslexia in children and young people? What can teachers do to help dyslexic learners find their place in the English classroom and achieve their potential? How can they help dyslexic learners to enjoy the subject and engage as fully as possible with the curriculum? To address some of these questions we will be joined by Professor Jackie Masterson who is Chair of the Psychology of Reading at IoE and also the module leader for Literacy Development and Reading and Spelling Difficulties. Jackie will share her expertise, set out some important principles and take questions from participants. Kate will then offer some practical strategies for you to take back to your classroom.
This course is aimed at mainstream classroom teachers wishing to expand their knowledge of dyslexia. If you already have a good understanding of dyslexia, for example you are a Sendco, have specific SEND teaching experience, or teach in a specialist setting, you are welcome to attend, but bear in mind there may not be much that is new to you.
This course will be recorded but attendees will not be audible or visible.

Kate Oliver
Kate Oliver taught for 14 years in Inner London in various roles. She now works as an education consultant for the English and Media Centre, specialising in KS3 and KS4. Her favourite aspects of English teaching are creative writing and poetry. She also has a particular interest in the wider implications of the subject such as getting students reading for pleasure and engaging teachers of other subjects with language across the curriculum. Her most recent publications for EMC are KS3 Poetry Plus, Just Write and Animal Farm: An EMC Full Text Study Edition.
Professor Jackie Masterson
Professor Jackie Masterson is Chair of the Psychology of Reading at the Institute of Education (UCL). She is the module leader for Reading and Spelling Difficulties and programme leader for the MA Education (Psychology). Her main research interests are in the areas of literacy development and literacy difficulties. She also carries out research in reading and spelling across languages and in multilinguals.
