Answers to some frequently asked questions about the English and Media Centre

Use our Frequently Asked Questions to find the answers some common queries about EMC's print and download publications, courses & consultancy, magazine subscriptions and much more.

1. ACCOUNT (a) I've forgotten my English and Media Centre account details. What do I do?

Click on 'Account sign in' (top right-hand corner).

Click on 'Forgotten your password?' and you will be sent an automated email with a link to enable you to change your password.

Please note: If you have forgotten the username or password you created to access the emagazine or MediaMagazine student areas, please see 'sign in' to your account (see button, top right), go to 'My Account' and click 'Update emagazine/MediaMagazine username and password'. If you have further queries, please email Lucy.

2. ACCOUNT (b) How do I update my account details?

Sign in to your primary account (top right hand corner).

You will then be able to update your primary account details including username and password.

3. ACCOUNT (c) Will students be able to access the school/institution account using our emag or MM username & password?

No. The emagazine or MediaMagazine username and password you set will only give access to the student (subscription) area of the website. 

Only when signed in to your account via the 'Account sign-in' button (see top right) will you be able to buy and download publications, book courses, apply for conference places, manage your magazine subscriptions.

4. ACCOUNT (d) Why am I signed out of my main account when I sign into a magazine area?

It's important to keep access to the main account and student areas separate. Signing you out of your account before you sign in to a magazine student area ensures your account details are kept secure. 

5. BUYING & SUBSCRIBING (a) How do I buy publications on the site?

You will first need to register an account by clicking on the 'Account sign in' button in the right-hand corner.

Once registered, sign in to your account.

(Please note: if you are signed in to the emagazine or MediaMagazine student area, you will not be able to buy publications. Sign in to your account first via the 'Account sign in' button.)

Schools in the UK

If you have registered and signed in as a UK school, you will be offered the option to pay securely by debit card or credit card or to request an invoice.

Individuals

If you have registered and logged in as an individual, you will be offered the option to pay securely by debit card or credit card. 

Schools outside the UK

If you are buying publications for a school outside the UK, you will be able to buy download publications and subscriptions to the magazine web only packages with a debit or credit card. If you want to buy a print publication or magazine subscription, please call 01634 290175.

6. BUYING & SUBSCRIBING (b) Why is there no basket displaying?

When signed in to the emagazine or MediaMagazine student area, you will be unable to buy publications, apply for course places etc. You will need to sign into your account via 'Account sign in' (top right of the screen).

7. BUYING & SUBSCRIBING (c) Can I get a copy of the receipt?

You can download copies of receipts for any purchases made on the English and Media Centre website.

  • Sign in via the 'Account sign in' button.
  • Go to My Account.
  • Choose 'View My Orders'.
  • Click on the order you need the receipt for.
  • Download the receipt.

8. BUYING & SUBSCRIBING (d) Who should I contact about an order for a print publication?

9. BUYING & SUBSCRIBING (e) How do I subscribe to emagazine or MediaMagazine?

  • Go to the emagazine or MediaMagazine section of the website. Click on 'Subscribe' (or 'Re-subscribe' if you are renewing a subscription).
  • Add the subscription you would like to your basket and check out. UK schools can choose to pay by debit/credit card or be invoiced. 
  • If you have bought a Print & Web subscription, you will then be asked to create a username and password to give to your students and colleagues so that they can access the student (subscription) areas.

10. BUYING & SUBSCRIBING (f) I've bought a subscription by post or phone. How do I access the subscription website?

You will need the voucher code you were sent when you subscribed to the magazine website package.

FIRST: register your institution on the EMC website

  • Go to www.englishandmedia.co.uk and click on ‘Account Sign in’ in the top right hand corner.
  • Create an account for your school/college. This is the account for your institution that will allow you to buy print and download publications, apply for courses and conference places and manage your subscriptions to the magazines.
  • You will be sent an email to activate your account. It should arrive immediately – please check your junk folder if it doesn’t. Click on the link in the email. 

SECOND: redeem your magazine subscription voucher

  • Log in to your newly-created account by clicking on ‘Account sign in’ in the top right hand corner of the home page.
  • After logging in, click the ‘Redeem voucher’ button.
  • Enter your unique voucher code and click submit.

Third: set a username and password to allow you to access the magazine student area

Set your magazine username and password to enable your students to sign in to the emagazine or MediaMagazine student area. Please do not use the same username and password as for the account you use to purchase EMC publications, subscriptions etc. 

You can keep this username and password from year to year, provided you have an active subscription. If at any point you want to change it, sign into your account and select the 'Update emagazine/MediaMagazine username and password option'.

12. BUYING AND SUBSCRIBING – I'm in a school outside the UK. How do I buy a print publication?

To buy print publications to be sent to a school outside the UK, please contact the English and Media Centre's distributors so that you can be given a price including postage and packing.

13. CONFERENCES (a) When can I book for next year's student Conferences?

We will let you know the exact date bookings will open for each Conference via email, the magazines and our course programme.

The following is intended only to give an approximate idea of when each Conference is usually held and when bookings open:

emagazine Literature Conference 

The Conference usually takes place in mid-October. Bookings open early June.

MediaMagazine Conference

The Conference usually takes place in the second half of the autumn term. Bookings open early July.

emagazine Language Conference

The Conference usually takes place in February. Bookings open early November.

14. CONFERENCES (b) What is your cancellation policy for the student conferences?

Bookings for Conference places can be cancelled without penalty up to approximately 5 weeks before the Conference. Places cancelled after this date will be subject to a charge:

  • places cancelled up to 2 weeks before the Conference will be subject to a 50% charge
  • after this date, the full fee will be charged.

Exact dates for this year's Conferences are given in the 'Important Info' tab when bookings open online .

15. CONSULTANCY: How do I arrange for EMC to work with my department?

EMC advisory staff work with departments, schools and LEAs on both short and longer term projects. Contact Kate Oliver by email or telephone: 020 7359 8080 to discuss your particular requirements.

16. COURSES (a) How do I book a course?

  • Browse the courses.
  • Add the course to your basket, filling in all details.
  • Check out.
  • You can pay for your course online in the following ways:
    • Request an invoice (if signed in as a UK school user)
    • Pay securely with debit or credit card.
  • Alternatively, call Fran on 020 7359 8080

17. COURSES (b) Can I cancel a place booked on a course?

We require 10 working days’ notice of cancellation, otherwise payment in full will be due. However, teacher substitutions can be made at any time.

18. COURSES (c) I have a question about a course or course booking – who should I contact?

22. MAGAZINE – STUDENT SUBSCRIPTION AREA (a) How do I set our password for emagazine or MediaMagazine?

1. Setting your magazine username and password for the first time

  1. If you have bought your subscription online (even if you have asked to be invoiced), you will automatically be directed to set your magazine username and password to share with your colleagues and students.
  2. If you have bought the subscription over the phone, by email, in person or by post, you will be sent a unique voucher code. 
  3. Sign in to your primary account. If you have not yet registered on the site, do so now.
  4. Once you are signed in, click on the 'Redeem Voucher' button (top right-hand corner).
  5. Enter your voucher code.
  6. You will then be asked to choose a username and password to share with your students and colleagues.

2. Changing your magazine username and password 

  1. Sign in to the EMC website with the username and password for your primary account.
  2. Once signed in, click on 'My Account' in the top right-hand corner.
  3. Click on 'Update emagazine/MediaMagazine username and password'.

23. MAGAZINE – STUDENT SUBSCRIPTION AREA (b) How do I change our password for emagazine or MediaMagazine?

  1. Sign in to your account (top right-hand corner). This is the institution account you use to buy and subscribe.
  2. Once signed in, click on 'My Account' in the top right hand corner.
  3. Click on 'Update your emagazine/MediaMagazine username and password'. 

24. MAGAZINE – STUDENT SUBSCRIPTION AREA (c) We have a subscription to both magazines. Can we use the same username name for both?

No. You will need to use different usernames for each magazine – you could just add 'emag' and 'mm' to distinguish the two usernames. You can use the same password for each.

25. MAGAZINE – STUDENT SUBSCRIPTION AREA (d) I'm having difficulty accessing the emagazine/MediaMagazine student area. What should I do?

Here are some of the reasons you might be having difficulty logging in to the emagazine/MediaMagazine student (subscription) area:

  • Your subscription has expired. All subscriptions run to the academic year (1st September to 31st August). You can check whether you have an active subscription by logging into your primary account and then choosing 'View my orders'.
  • You bought your subscription offline (by phone, email or post) and have not yet redeemed your unique voucher code. Once you have done this, you will be able to set a username and password for the magazine and access the subscription area.
  • Someone with access to the primary account has changed the username/password for accessing the magazine student (subscription) areas.
  • You are trying to log in with the username/password for the old emagazine or MediaMagazine site.

26. MAGAZINE – STUDENT SUBSCRIPTION AREA (e) Who should I contact about the emag/MediaMag subscription website?

27. PUBLICATIONS – DOWNLOAD (a) How do I download PDF/Video PDF publications?

To download the PDF/Video PDF publication to your computer, click on the PDF icon to begin your download. 

Your publication will download to the location specified in your browser settings, for example your desktop or a folder called 'Downloads'.

If you try to open a file before it has finished downloading you will get an error message.

To use a download publication, you must open it in Reader 8 or above.

Do not try to use the file in your internet browser (Safari, Explorer, Chrome, Firefox etc.).

We recommend that once you have downloaded your publication you make a local back up to avoid having repeatedly to download very large files. However, should you need to download your publication again, sign in to your primary account on the English and Media site and go to 'My Account'.

28. PUBLICATIONS – DOWNLOAD (b) How do I access downloads bought on EMCdownload?

EMCdownload is no longer an active purchasing site.

Previously purchased downloads will not be transferred to accounts on the new site.

EMCdownload will remain available as an archive site until Dec 2015 so that previously purchased downloads can be downloaded and saved. 

To access any downloads bought on EMCdownload:

  • Log in to www.emcdownload.co.uk with EMCd username and password
  • Go to account
  • Follow instructions to download all products to desktop.

29. PUBLICATIONS – DOWNLOAD (c) What programs do I need in order to view and print EMC's downloadable PDF publications?

You will need Adobe's free program Acrobat Reader 9 or above. You can download the latest version here.  

30. PUBLICATIONS – DOWNLOAD (d) What programs do I need in order to view and print EMC's downloadable Video PDF publications?

To view and print EMC's downloadable Video PDF publications, you will need the following programs:

Acrobat Reader 9 or above. Download the latest version here.

Flash player Download the latest version here.

31. PUBLICATIONS – DOWNLOAD (e) Where can I find my PDF or Video PDF on the English and Media Centre website?

Your PDF/Video PDF publication will be stored in your account on the English and Media Centre website.

To access your downloads:

  • sign in to your account (top right hand corner)
  • go to 'My Account'
  • click 'View your purchased downloads, and re-download them'.

32. PUBLICATIONS – DOWNLOAD (f) When I download my downloadable publications, where will they end up?

This depends on the preferences set in your web browser.

  • The downloaded file could open in your browser which means you can go to the File dropdown menu and select ‘Save as’ which enables you to store the file where you want
  • Or it might download to your folder called Downloads
  • Or it might download to your desktop.

33. PUBLICATIONS – DOWNLOAD (g) What do I need to know about using PDF and Video PDF publications?

First make sure you have saved the file to your desktop. Do not try to use the file in your internet browser (Safari, Explorer, Chrome, Firefox etc.) As the Video PDF files are large they can take some time to download (how long will depend on the speed of your internet connection and the time of day you are downloading the file – early morning will be quicker than in the middle of the day – but allow about 1 minute per 20MBs). If you try to open a file before it has finished downloading you will get an error message.

Opening, viewing and printing PDFs/Video PDFs

To view and print PDFs and Video PDFs, please ensure you open them with Acrobat Reader 9 or above. 

You can download the latest version of this free application by clicking here.

Follow the instructions to install the latest version of the Adobe Reader program. Once it is installed and you have agreed the license, open the program. Don’t just double click on the PDF icon as it may open the file in your old version of Reader.

Go to ‘File – Open’ and navigate your way to the PDF you have downloaded.

Move your cursor onto the video image. Click and the video will begin to play within the page.

To play the video clips to a whole class you will need a computer, data projector and screen.

34. PUBLICATIONS – DOWNLOAD (h) How do I play the video clips embedded in Video PDFs full screen?

Position the cursor on the video image.

  • On a PC: right click.
  • On a Mac either right click or ‘Control+click’. 

This will bring up a floating window. Select ‘Fullscreen’.

To exit full screen mode, click the escape button on your computer or right/‘Control+click’ to bring up the floating menu again and choose ‘Exit fullscreen’.

35. PUBLICATIONS – DOWNLOAD (i) Error message or embedded video won't play, even when you have the latest Flash Player installed?

37. PUBLICATIONS – DOWNLOAD (j) I’ve bought a downloadable publication by mistake. Can I get a refund?

If you have bought a download publication by mistake, please contact Lucy by email within 48 hours of purchase.

Refunds are given at the Centre's discretion.

38. PUBLICATIONS – SITE LICENCES: Can I network an EMC DVD?

Site Licences for English & Media Centre DVDs/CD ROMS

The English & Media Centre will grant site licences on all CDs and DVD at no extra cost. This means that you can use them on PCs or on VLEs, or copy them for use exclusively within your school/college. It is not permitted to pass on materials outside your institution in any form – electronic or otherwise. The English & Media Centre does not offer technical support for any installation process. 

39. PUBLICATIONS – SITE LICENSES: Can I photocopy a complete publication?

Where a publication is described as ‘photocopiable’, permission is granted to reproduce the materials for personal and educational use within the purchasing institution (including its Virtual Learning Environments and intranet). Redistribution by any means, including electronic, will constitute an infringement of copyright.

40. WEBSITE: How can I get help using the EMC website?
