This is a day-long, cross-specification course to introduce you to the principles and practices of A Level teaching. We will exemplify approaches on texts drawn from a range of genres, highlighting ways in which these can be applied to the texts you are teaching. This course will run with limited numbers to allow for plenty of opportunities to try out and reflect on the activities, individually, as a whole group and in smaller break-out sessions.
Areas covered on the day include:
Session 1 (10-11.30am)
- An introduction to A Level teaching and learning
- Planning and managing the reading of whole texts
- Priming the reading & whole text work.
Session 2 (11.45-1.15pm)
- Student writing about whole texts, including comparative
- Drama
- The question of context.
Session 3 (2-3.30pm)
- Teaching poetry: principles, practices and practical strategies for analysing poems, including comparative
- Making effective use of criticism
- Live Q&A.
NB: This is a repeat course.
Online, via Zoom. Details of how to join will be sent before the session.
- Course materials will be sent out in advance. Please either print these out or have them available on screen during the session.
- After the session you will receive the PowerPoint presentation and any resources used on the course.
- This course will run with limited numbers.
- On these longer EMC online courses, we try to make good use of Zoom's interactive features, such as breakout rooms and live Q&A. This requires people to unmute their microphones and, preferably, to turn on their camera. If you would like to take part but will not be able to unmute your microphone, please email us ([email protected]) to discuss whether the course is suitable for you.
- As participants may be audible and visible, this course will not be recorded.
- Please note: courses are designed to be watched by one participant only.
I felt the course provided great value and gave me a range of practical strategies. Elements I appreciated include: -Touching on different text types studied at A Level - good overview -Interactive times in breakout rooms and also typing answers into the chat. It meant that everyone could contribute equally and we could hear a wider range of ideas (also very neurodivergent-friendly having the chance to write and think about ideas before sharing!). -Completing activities as if we were the students, making learning more practical and interactive. I stayed much more engaged this way! -Resources sent out after the course were very helpful to refer to later and share within my department.
Heather Power, South Wilts Grammar School, EMC CPD Online: Starting to Teach A Level English Literature (15.1.2026, Spring 2026)I thought the course was very well organised and that the whole day was productive, informative and engaging. The opportunity to work with and share ideas with other teachers was very useful and the breakout room tasks were well considered. I really liked the way that we were encouraged to consider our expectations of A Level students and the need to push them to be creative and independent. Ideas from the session have already been incorporated into my practice with notable gains in student participation. The quality of the shared resources and additional and generous access to further study materials was also very welcome. I felt that there was a genuine passion and enthusiasm from both course leaders that made the whole day a pleasure to attend. I am able to share with members of the department some valuable resources and strategies to employ in the classroom. Thanks very much for providing the experience.
