Price

Online
Duration
10-3.30pm

If you are (or are about to be) teaching English Language for the first time, this course will give you an introduction to most of the key areas. We will explore ways to develop both your own knowledge and your students’ understanding of the building blocks of language analysis and the main approaches to sociolinguistic research used on all AS & A Level courses. Assuming no prior knowledge of English Language teaching and not focused on one particular specification, this course will equip you to take on the first year of teaching with confidence.

Areas to be covered on the day include:

  • A look at the different types of text and data typically found at A Level
  • An introduction to sociolinguistic topic areas such as gender, ethnicity, accent and language change
  • A survey of some of the main debates and arguments about language
  • How to encourage student-led research and writing.

NB. This is a repeat course.

Online, via Zoom. Details of how to join will be sent before the session.

Download Zoom

  • Course materials will be sent out in advance. Please either print these out or have them available on screen during the session.
  • After the session you will receive the PowerPoint presentation and any resources used on the course.
  • This course will run with limited numbers.
  • On these longer EMC online courses, we try to make good use of Zoom's interactive features, such as breakout rooms and live Q&A. This requires people to unmute their microphones and, preferably, to turn on their camera. If you would like to take part but will not be able to unmute your microphone, please email Kate ([email protected]) to discuss whether the course is suitable for you.
  • As participants may be audible and visible, this course will not be recorded.
  • Please note: courses are designed to be watched by one participant only.

Really enjoyed. The richness came from resources and an expert to talk us through them. Gave us lots of ideas about how to adjust the curriculum. Thank you. Rebecca Hall, Temple Moor High School, Starting to Teach English Language A Level, Autumn 2024

Really enjoyable and helpful; gave a great overview of skills that need to be developed and - just as importantly - ways of doing that in the classroom. Tyson Stevens, Shoreham Academy, Starting to Teach English Language A Level, Autumn 2024
