Mapping Poetry: A Survey of Secondary School Practices in England

Tower EMC Poetry Project (2)

This January we are launching Mapping Poetry: a year-long project to examine how poetry is taught and experienced in secondary schools in England. Your professional insight is essential to ensure this research genuinely reflects classroom practice.

Supported by a generous grant from Tower Poetry*, the project will gather evidence from teachers and students through surveys, interviews and school visits. We will explore:

  • What poetry is being taught
  • How it is being approached both in classrooms and in extra-curricular activities
  • What is working well
  • Where teachers see gaps, challenges and possibilities for development.

The findings will be shared in a national report, mapping the current picture and suggesting ways of going forward to enrich young people’s experience of poetry in their education.

Updates on the project will be shared on this webpage as the research progresses.

The survey

Many thanks to the 100s of teachers who completed our survey. We are now working on analysing the data and arranging follow up interviews.

Congratulations to Vikki Callaghan, The Hollyfield School, whose entry was selected in our draw for a £150 voucher to use on EMC's website.

* EMC would like to acknowledge the support of Christ Church's Tower Poetry Development Grant
